  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 4 tbsp butter (for greasing and sautéing)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Slice the russet potatoes into 1/8-inch thick rounds using a mandolin or knife.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Sauté the diced onion until translucent (about 5 minutes), then add minced garlic and cook for an additional 30 seconds.
  4. In a bowl, whisk together heavy cream, salt, and pepper until combined. Optionally add a sprinkle of nutmeg.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the greased dish. Top with half of the sautéed onions and garlic mixture, pour half of the cream mixture over it, and sprinkle with cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown on top.
