Description

Indulge in the ultimate comfort food with a French Onion Patty Melt, where savory caramelized onions and gooey melted cheese come together between crispy bread. This mouthwatering sandwich is perfect for cozy nights or as a crowd-pleaser at gatherings. With its rich flavors and simple preparation, you’ll find yourself making this delightful dish time and again!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef (lean)
  • 2 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia)
  • 4 slices Swiss or Gruyère cheese
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • ½ cup beef broth (low-sodium if preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add thinly sliced onions and cook until translucent, about 10 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent burning.
  2. Add flavor: Pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce once onions are soft and starting to brown. Let simmer until liquid reduces slightly.
  3. Prepare the patties: Shape ground beef into four patties, seasoning generously with salt and pepper. Cook in a separate skillet over medium-high heat for about 4 minutes per side until browned.
  4. Melt the cheese: Place one slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking; cover briefly to melt.
  5. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread. In another skillet, place two slices butter-side down, add a patty topped with caramelized onions and another slice of cheese, then top with remaining bread slices (butter-side up).
  6. Grill to perfection: Grill each sandwich for about 3 minutes per side until golden brown.
