  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar (for dusting)
  • Gel food coloring (red and green)
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or nuts (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, followed by vanilla extract. Mix until combined.
  2. Gradually incorporate the flour until smooth. Divide dough in half; color one half red and the other green using gel food coloring.
  3. Wrap each dough portion in plastic wrap and chill for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Roll out each color between parchment paper to about 1/4 inch thick. Layer the red dough on top of the green and roll tightly into a log shape.
  5. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the log into 1/4-inch rounds and place on a lined baking sheet. Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
  6. Cool on wire racks, then dust with powdered sugar before serving.
