  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 1 tsp peppermint extract
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 large egg (room temperature)
  • 1 tsp red food coloring (gel)
  • ½ cup crushed candy canes (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a mixing bowl, cream together softened butter and sugar until fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  2. Mix in the egg and peppermint extract until well combined. Add red food coloring until you reach your desired shade.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together flour and baking powder, then gradually add this mixture to the wet ingredients until just combined.
  4. Divide the dough in half; keep one half plain and mix red food coloring into the other until uniformly colored.
  5. Roll small pieces from each dough into ropes about 6 inches long. Twist one white rope with one red rope into a candy cane shape.
  6. Place on lined baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes or until slightly golden. After cooling, sprinkle with crushed candy canes.
