Description

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 3/4 cup whole milk or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Finely chop the onion and set aside.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar until smooth.
  3. Add milk and egg; stir gently until just combined without overmixing.
  4. Fold in the chopped onion evenly into the batter.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pot to around 350°F (175°C).
  6. Drop spoonfuls of batter into the hot oil and fry for about 3 minutes per side or until golden brown.
  7. Use a slotted spoon to remove hush puppies; drain on paper towels and serve warm.
